Ask the Staff: Getting Ready for the Downhill Mountain Biking Season at Zion National Park

Summer is finally here (I know, I thought the snow would never stop too!), and that means it's time to gear up for the thrilling downhill mountain biking season around Zion National Park. Our staff at Zion Cycles is excited to share their bike upgrades and preparations for the upcoming months of adrenaline-pumping rides. Let's see how they are getting ready for the action!

Nick Martinelli: Shop Staff

Favorite Trail to Ride this Summer: Brian Head Odyssey Cross-Country Race

Chosen Upgrade: Bontrager Line Pro Carbon Wheelset with Tannus Armour Inserts and new Continental Kryptotal Tires

Why: Carbon wheels are stiffer and lighter for more pedal efficiency. Tannus Armour inserts are light, but prevent your rims from getting damaged when it gets rough. The Continental Kryptotal tires are part of their new gravity lineup. They offer a downhill enduro casing for more sidewall protection from sharp rocks and the soft casing is some of the stickiest rubber we’ve ever ridden.

Emily Stoeppel: Technician

Favorite Trail to Ride this Summer: Navajo Lake Loop

Chosen Upgrade: A New Carbon Fuel-EX Gen 6 Bike!

Why: This bike is so fast while still having the suspension to tackle all of the local Mesa rides.

Sarah Jarzyniecki: Shop Manager

Favorite Trail to Ride this Summer: C-Trail to Highlands to Boneyard to Black Ops in Cedar City

Chosen Upgrade: Diety Bladerunner Pedals

Why: Pedals are one of the most noticeable upgrades because they are one of your three contact points on the bike (grips, saddle and pedals). The Deity Bladerunner Pedals have a concave shape, which means the spikes contact your foot for better grip.

Jimmy Wilson: Technician

Favorite Trail to Ride this Summer: Anything and Everything up at Brian Head Resort

Chosen Upgrade: Volume Spacers and Fresh Dust Wipers in my Front Fork

Why: A custom suspension tune can make a world of difference in how your bike rides!

Hattie Dalzell: Shop Purchaser / Technician

Favorite Trail to Ride this Summer: Bunker Creek

Chosen Upgrade: MTX RACE Red Label Brake Pads

Why: Even my single piston Shimano Deore brakes feel great with these upgraded pads installed. More stopping power and modulation than the stock pads plus they are longer lasting and don’t make noise even when they get dusty!
